The Burlington Day Program has the capacity to serve 25 male and female probationers from Burlington County. The participants range in age from 13 to 18 at the time of admission to the program. The minimum time that a student spends in the program is six months.
The program provides innovative programming that promotes a positive attitude toward school and learning. In addition, the program helps young people with decision making, accountability, conflict resolution, goal setting and employment. The program attempts to bring juveniles and their families together for counseling to help them develop a stronger relationship.
The primary goal of the educational component is to prepare students to continue their education or vocational training after the completion of their time at the Burlington Day Program. Instruction is offered in a wide range of subjects including plumbing, painting, carpentry and masonry with particular emphasis on historical reconstruction. The program also operates a fishery that raises tilapia.
The Burlington Day Program seeks to help juveniles develop ties to their community. Working in conjunction with the Burlington County Historical Society, the program receives a grant that helps fund an innovative program with the Burlington County Institute for Technology.
Additional community service projects are coordinated through the Commission's Restorative Justice Program. The principles of Restorative Justice teach juveniles to accept responsibility for the wrong they have done while giving back to their communities.
